YOUTH ACTIVIST LEADERSHIP COUNCIL

To promote SDG 16 "Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions." under the Youth Activist Leadership Council, we recruit and train young people to join our team of volunteers at the village level to take part in peace-building. Samburu County experiences ethnic conflict between various pastoralist communities living in the area. The conflict is as a result of scarce resources such as water, pastures, and grazing land. Climate change has made livestock rearing difficult due to long drought spells that cause the deaths of livestock and human beings. Due to the economic difficulties stemming from the death of livestock and pressure from cultural practices that attach importance to the use of livestock to perform important rituals such as marriages, young people engage in illegal theft of livestock. The conflict has destabilized the region economically, resulting in underdevelopment in all sectors. Our best hope in this situation is to train a new generation of chain breakers. From our training, these young people gain skills and knowledge in advocacy, negation, and peacebuilding. They later use the skills at the village level as village peace mentors who train many other youths to take an active role in peacebuilding. Objective Create awareness of peacebuilding in the community. Facilitate community information policies where sensitive information is shared with the community rangers and national police to counter attackers. Initiating and encouraging open discussion on conflict resolution through community dialogue forums .
